Virginia Beach Oceanfront Shootings Update After a ‘Chaotic Night’

Two people are dead and at least eight injured following shootings at Virginia Beach during what police have described as a “chaotic night.”

Officers from the Virginia Beach Police Department were patrolling the 1900 block of Atlantic Avenue by the popular beachfront when they heard gunshots just after 11 p.m. local time on Friday.

At least eight gunshot victims were then discovered in the areas of 17th Street and 22nd Street with injuries ranging from serious to life threatening, according to Virginia Beach Police Chief, Paul Neudigate.

He said that while officers were at that crime scene, additional shots were fired in the area of 20th and the Pacific.

“That resulted in an individual being confronted by a Virginia Beach Police Officer, resulting in a police-intervention shooting. That individual is deceased,” Neudigate told reporters, according to 13 News Now.

He said that another person was killed “that was not part of the police-intervention shooting. We don’t believe it was part of the original shooting behind us,” he said.

Police later said in a statement that an adult female victim died after suffering gunshot wounds at the scene.

It also said that the police officer who confronted and fatally shot a man, had been with the department for five years and has been placed on “administrative assignment” pending the investigation, as is standard procedure.

One police officer was also taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries after being struck by a car during the fracas.

“What you can see is we had a very chaotic incident—a very chaotic night in the beach,” Neudigate said.

“We believe we have a total—at this time, preliminarily—of nine additional shooting victims, one of which is also deceased.”

He said that “several people” are in custody as police investigate what happened, and that state police had not been called in and that there was “a separate shooting incident that we’re still trying to piece together.”

“So as you can see, many different crime scenes, a lot of work ahead for us,” he added.

“This is an active investigation, which is being conducted by the Virginia Beach Police Departments Detective Bureau as well as the Office of the Commonwealth’s Attorney and the Virginia Beach Police Department’s Office of Internal Affairs,” the Virginia Beach Police Department said in a statement.

“With regard to the shooting, there is no suspect information available at this time,” it added. The Liberty Buzz has contacted the Virginia Beach Police Department for further information.
