Video Shows Deer Crashing Through School Bus Window, Landing on Student

A deer crashed through the front windshield of a school bus in central Virginia on Thursday morning, sailing past the vehicle’s entrance door, and tumbling over its foremost partition before colliding with the backrest in its first seating row.

Video footage, recorded by a security camera situated behind the bus driver, captured the incident in its entirety.

After suddenly zooming past the driver via the bus’ front window, which could be seen detaching from its surrounding frame completely, the deer landed briefly in a bus seat, beside a student who covered their head as the animal came closer. Some exclamatory remarks from passengers, outside of the camera’s frame, were heard immediately following the deer’s surprising entrance.

The student later told peers that the deer did land on them momentarily while trying to sleep.

The animal then fell to the ground while the visibly concerned bus driver, whose name has not been released and who, according to local news reports, said that he preferred to remain unidentified, quickly parked the vehicle and opened the entrance door. The animal quickly exited the bus and scurried away from view.

Linda Hockaday, assistant to Powhatan County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Eric Jones, lauded the school bus driver’s conduct in comments to The Liberty Buzz on Thursday afternoon.

“The driver did an amazing job!” she said in an email, additionally confirming that no one was injured during the incident.

The incident occurred just after 6 a.m. ET, as a Powhatan County Public School bus transported students from their residences to the high school building, according to Powhatan Today. Along with the individuals present during the incident, the deer emerged from its early morning accident unscathed.

“The deer was not injured at all. He’s still running across the field there,” a man told the bus driver, approaching the vehicle while it remained parked by the roadside.

Brian Bartlett, the interim director of transportation at Powhatan County Public Schools, recounted details related to the crash in comments to Powhatan Today on Thursday. The education official said that he assisted in students’ transport to the high school after the bus driver reported the incident. While no one was harmed, the bus windshield and windshield wipers were damaged, Bartlett reportedly said.

The interim transportation director additionally praised the bus driver for diffusing the morning’s situation quickly and safely, according to Powhatan Today.

“He did very well. He was able to get the bus off to the side of the road safely, turned the four ways on while the bus was moving, and did all of this while the deer was still in the floor of the bus kicking all around,” Bartlett noted of the driver’s conduct. “He did a very good job at keeping the bus safe and keeping the kids on the bus safe.”
