Newnan residents have been urged to stay at home and to avoid driving to see the damage. The high school has announced that it will remain closed today.

In the early hours of Friday morning, the City of Newnan said: “The city experienced heavy damage in and around the historic downtown area due to tonight’s weather.

“Please note that both the city and county crews are in route and working on scene to clear impacted areas. Please remain safe in your homes and take shelter. Stay safe!”

Newnan High School wrote on Twitter: “Due to extensive storm damage in many areas of our county, Coweta County School System will be closed on Friday, March 26, 2021. School will be closed for students and staff.”

The city’s police department issued a statement on Facebook, writing: “Please…get off the road in Newnan. We have a large amount of damage to include trees down and powerlines down. By you being out driving and sightseeing, It is impeding our efforts to get to people that need help.”

The National Weather Service issued tornado warnings for Georgia, Alabama and South Carolina on Thursday, and parts of those southern states were hit by several tornadoes.

NWS Atlanta has also warned locals: “Significant portions of north GA are currently under Flash Flood Warnings.

“Please, do not drive into or through flooded roadways. We have been getting numerous reports through the night of water rescues occurring from driving into flooded roadways. Turn Around Don’t Drown!”

More than 19,000 energy customers in Georgia are currently without power. There are more than 3,000 power outages in Coweta County, where Newnan is located.
