Suez Canal Ship Swings Back Across Channel in High Winds as Ever Given Refloated

The Ever Given, the giant container which was partially refloated Monday morning after being lodged sideways in the Suez Canal for nearly a week, is being swung back to its previous position due to strong winds, according to a Reuters witness and a canal source.

The ship is reportedly being switched back to its previous position ahead of the next attempt to fully refloat the vessel.

On Monday afternoon, @AJABreaking, the Twitter account for Al Jazeera’s coverage of breaking news, tweeted: “Urgent | Reuters, according to sources: The ship stranded in the Suez Canal returns to its previous position in the width of the canal due to strong winds.”

The canal source said the vessel’s bow was afloat in the water, despite the change in position, and had not become grounded again.

Leth Agencies, a canal service provider for the Suez and other waterways, tweeted Monday afternoon: “As the tide is lowering, tugs appear to temporarily cease their operations at #EVERGIVEN. Updates regarding continued efforts to follow.”

The Liberty Buzz has contacted Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement (BSM), the vessel’s technical manager, for comment.

The 200,000 gross tonnage vessel was grounded in the waterway last week while en route to Rotterdam, Netherlands, blocking all traffic across the canal, which connects the Mediterranean to the Red Sea.

This is a developing story and this article will be updated when more information is available.
