A man was taken into custody shortly after a Los Angeles police officer was shot inside a supermarket on Sunday.

Officers responded to a call of a man causing a disturbance inside the Ralphs grocery store, near the intersection of Balboa Boulevard and Devonshire Street in the Granada Hills neighborhood, at around 6.30 p.m., the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) said.

Officers were responding when they learned the suspect was armed with a gun, police said.

Cellphone video footage captured by a witness at the scene showed the shirtless suspect standing on top of shelves at the store yelling at people.

Peter Genovese, who captured the footage, told Newsweek: “I arrived at the Ralphs grocery store to go shopping for dinner and noticed a bunch of people standing outside, pointing their phones towards the store.”

He said he then spotted a Hispanic man, who he estimated was in his mid-30s, standing on top of shelves in the store’s freezer aisle.

“He was yelling at a couple of officers, who then called for backup. More officers arrived and they eventually put on tactical gear and brought in non-lethal weapons,” Genovese said.

The LAPD said the officer-involved shooting occurred after officers made contact with the man. It was not immediately clear how many rounds were fired, but the LAPD said one officer was struck by gunfire.

Genovese said the suspect had jumped off the shelves and ran towards the back of the store, where the shooting occurred.

The suspect ran out of the back of the supermarket and into an Arco gas station across the street, Genovese added, but then “walked out and laid on the ground.”

“By then, many many officers had arrived, along with two police helicopters, fire trucks, ambulances,” he said.

The LAPD said the suspect was taken into police custody after emerging from the business.

The man, who the LAPD said was not struck by any gunfire, was taken to a local hospital for a medical evaluation. A firearm was recovered at the scene, police added.

The officer who was shot sustained injuries that are not life-threatening, the LAPD said, and is expected to make a full recovery.

Later on Sunday night, LAPD Chief Michel Moore said the officer had been released from hospital. “Officer out of hospital with sutures to hand. Grateful,” Moore wrote on Twitter.

The LAPD has been contacted for additional comment.
