Matt Gaetz Associate’s Attorney Cracks Jokes, Refuses to Answer Question on Allegations

An attorney representing Joel Greenberg, an associate of Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL), made jokes on Thursday as he refused to answer a reporter’s question about whether his client had co-ordinated sexual encounters between the congressman and underage girls.

Gaetz is being investigated by the Department of Justice over allegations of a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old girl. He denies the accusations.

The probe reportedly stemmed from a separate investigation into Greenberg, a former tax collector in Seminole County, Florida, who was indicted last year on federal charges including sex trafficking.

Greenberg’s attorney Fritz Scheller—speaking to reporters after a hearing in Orlando, in footage shared by website The Recount—was asked whether his client had introduced Gaetz to “any underaged girls for sexual relations.”

“I’m just gonna let you sit down there and so I can look over your head and ignore that question,” Scheller said, in an apparent tone of jest. “I apologize, I just can’t answer that question.”

He continued by joking: “That was a little devious, you hiding down there below and then you zinged that at me, you know?”

Scheller was also asked whether developments in Greenberg’s case would give Gaetz “anything to worry about.”

“I’m sure Matt Gaetz is not feeling very comfortable today,” the attorney replied.

The Associated Press has reported that Greenberg is seeking to strike a plea deal with investigators—and could serve as a witness in the Gaetz probe.

Since The New York Times broke the news of the DoJ investigation into Gaetz, further allegations about his inappropriate sexual conduct have emerged. A Daily Beast report on Thursday alleged that the congressman had paid for sex with young women through Venmo transactions with Greenberg.

In a statement denying the allegations, Gaetz, who is engaged, claimed he and his family were being targeted by a $25 million extortion plot. Despite mounting calls for his resignation, the congressman and staunch ally of former President Donald Trump has refused to step down and remains on the House judiciary committee.

During Thursday’s press conference in Orlando, Scheller poked fun at reporters he claimed had attempted to get in touch with him through his wife.

“Do you know how uncomfortable it was, taking in mind that I don’t talk to her about the case?” he said. “She said, ‘I got this call about you, a congressman and underage girls.’ And so I had a lot of explaining to do.”
