BLM leader slams de Blasio’s vaccine mandate, citing racism issues

Chivona Newsome, cofounder of the Greater New York Chapter of Black Lives Matter, blasted Democrat Mayor Bill de Blasio’s vaccine mandate, citing its racist nature. Newsome, who also ran as a congressional candidate for New York’s 15th district last year, claims that de Blasio’s repressive ordinance targeted black people.

“Although Mayor Bill De Blasio ran on progressives values, nothing in his tenure will attest to his campaign promises. The September 13th vaccine mandate is racist and specifically targets Black New Yorkers. The vaccination passports are modern-day Freedom Papers, which limit the free will of Black people,” Newsome said in an interview.

“The vaccination mandates infringe upon the civil liberties of the Black community. It’s more than where we can dine or enjoy entertainment, it will result in loss of income. As of Monday, September 27, Black health care workers and educators will lose their jobs,” she added.

De Blasio’s mandate took effect earlier this month and it ordered indoor establishments such as restaurants and various shops to require proof of vaccination before permitting customers to enter. The strict directive can also fine local businesses a whopping $5,000 for not complying. So far, around 3,200 businesses were given warnings for disobeying rules.

“When you hear those words, I want you to imagine the notion that, because someone’s vaccinated, they can do all the amazing things that are available in this city,” de Blasio said back in August.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, African-Americans make up 17.6 percent of New York State’s population. Unfortunately, only 14% of the total vaccinated New Yorkers are from the black community.

However, Newsome believes that deBlasio’s vaccine mandates could create an unsafe space for black people, stating that it could be used against people of color. The distrust between the African-American community and law enforcers has become a recurring theme in the country recently and the BLM leader thinks that this repressive mandate could only fan the flames.

“It is the duty of Black Lives Matter Greater NY to fight for the liberty of Black people. The vaccination passport will not be a free pass to racism. Our organization pledges to demonstrate until the vaccine mandate is abolished,” Newsome stated.

In reality, the issue of personal choice does not cover any color as it affects everyone, regardless of race, gender and religion. The COVID-19 vaccine will help the world recover from the ruins created by this pandemic, however, it is important that people get their shots without forcing them. Our government must balance public health and personal freedom, two factors vital to the survival of every human being.
